| The very first match I went to got me hooked on polo – hooked
on the game, hooked on polo ponies, and the people of polo. As an
artist I’m challenged to create works that communicate peak
moments of play: just as a player is about to hit a ball, or chasing
it wildly downfield. But I find even a player’s silhouette to
be visually exciting, breaking up the space in the composition with
arms and legs of pony and player, a mallet resting over his or her
shoulder and, everywhere else, a glorious landscape.
The paintings begin as sketches drawn from life, often developed
in charcoal or gouache, and then loosely sketched directly on the
canvas in oil. I like to keep the works in each medium as fluid
as possible, which allows for greater participation by the viewer,
and reminds me of the experience of watching a great match in person.
Polo action, equine subjects and people portraits are also available
by commission. |
