Procedure

Before any work is begun, Mr Sundwall and the client will consider the topics of location, pose, costume, lighting, background, and the mood of the painting. The size of the picture is usually determined by where it is to be hung. When working with young and older adults, an approach which includes both an oil sketch from life and digital photography is preferred, though a portrait can be done from photo reference alone when required. One or two 90-minute painting sessions (at the client's home or office) allows the artist the see aspects of the subject's expression and nature which would not necessarily be captured by photography alone.

Digital photography is downloaded to the computer and reviewed directly by both client and artist for the general direction and feeling of the work.

Back in the studio with oil sketch and photos for reference, Mr Sundwall will prepare a small oil study of the portrait for the client's consideration. With approval of the sketch, work on the final painting begins. In approximately 3 months the painting will be ready for client viewing. Out of town clients will receive a photograph of the work for approval, those within driving distance will be presented with the painting in person.

Portraits of small children follow the same procedure with the exception of the portrait sketch.

Horse and Rider Portraits
The procedure is the same as above, except oil sketches would be painted separately.
Equine Portraits
The procedure is the same as above.
Small Animal Portraits
Small animal portraits are painted exclusively from photographs in a client- approved pose.
