Portraits have been the mort important
subject since I started painting, and
the most challenging.
Great portraits go beyond mere likeness and evoke
the
actual presence of the person, and that’s why people have portraits
done of the
ones they love and admire. A painting needn’t be photographic,
and the
essence of a person can’t be captured in the snap of the shutter.
But in sitting
with the subject and watching the changing expressions on the subject’s
face as
I work, a bit of the essence starts to emerge on the canvas... that’s
what
I’m seeking, and that’s what portraiture is about.
