Other Information

Complicated backgrounds: Backgrounds are usually kept simple to keep the
viewer focused on the subject, but sometimes a patron requests a specific
background, such as a law library or a landscape with special details in it. In such
cases, there is an additional fee of 50%.

Size: Figures are often painted slightly smaller than lifesize, but there
are no rules about it – a portrait can be painted at any size. The most
important consideration in deciding what size you want your picture to be is, where
it is going to be hung? A small picture sometimes doesn’t look right in a
large space, and vice-versa.

About sittings: I paint directly from life in my studio, in the client’s
home, or at some other location. Each “sitting” is 2 1/2 to 3 hours long, which
includes rest breaks for the sitter and myself. I prefer 3 to 5 sittings
spread out over a week or two, and I will take photographs once a pose has been
decided on so I can work on the painting without the sitter being present. For
children I sketch from life, make color notations, and finish the painting
from sketches and photographs approved by the client. From start to finish it
takes 3 to 10 weeks to complete a portrait, depending on its size, complexity
and the agreed upon schedule of painting sessions.
